This excursion is of general interest for visitors to South Africa, not just specialist earth scientists. We show where the greatest goldfields and platinum and chromite fields were discovered and mined, and recount the history of the area. We drive in a coach to a vantage site overlooking Johannesburg and explain the history and the Witwatersrand Supergroup rocks.
We then drive across the ancient granitic gneiss complex and through the Transvaal Supergroup rocks to Hartbeestpoort Dam. The cable car will take you to the top of the Magaliesberg Quartzite for a vantage view over the western Bushveld Complex and its platinum and chromite mines. Lunch can be purchased at the cable car restaurants & is for delegate's own account.
