Quantitative Phase Analysis

Phase Abundance Determination for Mineralogical Applications

: R4,000

Duration: 2 Days, 30 & 31 August 2014

Convenors: Ian Madsen

Sponsored by: Bruker

Description:

This two day workshop will focus on theoretical and practical approaches to the derivation of Quantitative Phase Abundance (QPA) from powder diffraction data (with emphasis on laboratory-based X-ray diffraction).

Day 1 will include lectures covering (i) Methods for QPA, (ii) Data requirements for QPA, (iii) Issues in QPA from industrial samples (iv) Quantification of phases with partial or no known crystal structure and (v) Towards one wt% accuracy.

Day 2 will see the group will split into sub-groups based on the software of different manufacturers. There will be demonstrations and some hands-on work with software in (i) single peak methods, (ii) whole pattern (Rietveld based) methods, (iii) internal standard method, (iv) external standard method, and (v) use of phases with partial or no known crystal structure.
