Taking place on: 6 - 11 September 2014
This field trip is designed to present an overview of the geological setting, genesis and paleoenvironmental significance of the early Paleoproterozoic large iron and manganese ore deposits hosted by the Transvaal Supergroup in the Griqualand West area of the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. The focus would not only be on the nature of the deposits but also on how they relate to major paleoenvironmental changes, including the Great Oxidation Event (GOE), from deposition of the Neoarchean Campbellrand carbonate platform through the Arche boundary into the Kuruman-Griquatown iron formation succession, followed by the Makganyene Snowball Earth glaciation and Ongeluk volcanic event leading into deposition of the giant Kalahari Manganese Field and eventually formation of the oldest known laterites on Earth and associated ancient supergene Sishen-type high-grade hematite ore deposits.

Day 1 – 6 September 09:00
Depart Johannesburg for Kuruman and Red Sans Country Lodge Short stops on Mesoarchean Contorted Bed iron formation of the Witwatersrand Supergroup and fluvial conglomerates of the Neoarchean Ventersdorp Supergroup.
Evening presentation on geology of Griqualand West.
Day 2 – 7 September
Morning walk profile on Gamohaan Hill across the Arche boundary along the transition from platform to deep water carbonates of the Campbellrand carbonate platform into overlying microbanded Kuruman iron formation.
Afternoon bring visits to shallow shelf granular Griquatown iron formation.
Evening presentation on geology of iron ore deposits of the area.
Day 3 – 8 September
Round trip to south of Postmasburg visiting the ancient supergene Rooinekke iron ore deposit along the unconformity at base of the ~2,0 Ga Gamagara/Mapedi red bed succession, Ongeluk pillow lava with interbeds of jasper, Rooinekke iron formation of the Koegas Subgroup with associated stromatolitic carbonate bioherms and glacial pavement at base of Makganyene diamictite with striated clasts. Day 4 – 9 September
Visit Sishen-type iron ore and Postmasburg-type manganese mines, with associated pisolitic laterites and karst structures in dolomite, on the Maremane dome between Kathu and Postmasburg.
Evening presentation on geology of the Kalahari manganese field.
Day 5 – 10 September
Visit an open cast manganese mine in the giant Kalahari Manganese Field near Hotazel and a Kalahari mineral workshop near Black Rock.
Day 6 – 11 September
Drive back to Johannesburg to arrive at about 16h00.

4. Cancellations received before 30 May 2014 will receive a full refund less a 10% administration fee.
5. Cancellations received between 31 May and 31 July 2014 will receive a 50% refund.
6. Cancellations received after 31 July 2014 will not receive a refund.
7. All refunds are subject to the approval of the Organising Committee.
8. The organising committee reserves the right to change or cancel a tour.
